LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Jefferson County Public Schools celebrated the opening of the new Diane L. Porter Preschool with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday morning, Aug. 25.

Located behind Watterson Elementary School on Frederica Drive in Buechel, the single-story, $24 million facility spans almost 50,000 square feet and features 23 classrooms, an outdoor learning area, and an inclusive playground. It is one of 17 dedicated preschools across the district.

The state-of-the-art school is named in honor of Diane L. Porter, a retired JCPS educator, administrator, and Board of Education chair who dedicated over 55 years of service to the school system. Porter joined district leaders and school officials at the ceremony.

“Every great story has a beginning,” said Carlisa Gibson, JCPS Preschools Executive Director. “For generations of children, an important part of their story will begin right here. We are not simply opening a building. We are opening a place where children will be known, families will be supported, and possibilities will take root.”
