WAVE 3 News Editorial - June 2, 2015: Assessing Property Value

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Property taxes help a community thrive, but no one is thrilled about paying them.
Technology has improved so much now that computer mapping systems help assess property values.
The Commonwealth of Kentucky requires all taxable property to be visited every four years, so field assessors are an integral part of the process as well. In tandem, the process seems to work well, provided it is followed.

Recent allegations have been made in Louisville that the home visit part of the equation has been compromised. We certainly hope that is not the case.
It may be that keeping up with the times necessitates a law change that permits the computer mapping to be the lone determinant in setting property values, or that the home visit requirement be extended beyond four years.
That certainly may be worth legislative discussion and action. For now, the law must be implemented as written.
