LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB+WAVE) — A 53-year-old man was arrested Friday after allegedly attempting to kidnap a girl at gunpoint in Salem, Indiana.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded at 4:30 p.m. to a home on North Naugle Road after a report of a man attempting to abduct a girl at gunpoint.

Police said Jeffrey Mauck of Borden, Indiana, approached the girl outside her home and attempted to force her into his vehicle.

The girl told police that Mauck grabbed her and threatened her with a gun.

Police said she screamed for help and struggled to break free. The struggle caught the attention of family members, who came outside and detained Mauck until police arrived.

Mauck was found to be in possession of a revolver, ammunition, handcuffs and two folding knives, according to police.

“This is an extremely disturbing incident, and we are thankful this young girl was able to get away and that her family acted quickly,” Washington County Sheriff Brent Miller said in a news release. “Anyone who attempts to harm or abduct a child in Washington County will be met with the full force of law enforcement. Protecting our children and keeping our families safe will always be among our highest priorities.”

Mauck was charged with attempted kidnapping, criminal confinement, aggravated battery, pointing a firearm and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
