Bullitt East parents raise concerns about possible 6-period school day
MT. WASHINGTON, Ky. (WDRB+WAVE) — Bullitt East High School parents got the chance to give feedback on whether they want the school day to go from seven periods to six, which one parent said will cause her son to miss band.
A petition circulating in Bullitt County says eliminating a class period would reduce elective availability and potentially force students to choose between required academic courses and their passion for the arts.
April Howard is a Bullitt East parent and one of the people against moving to six periods. Her son is a sophomore at the school and has been in band since sixth grade. She said the arts are important because they help students express themselves.
“To be able to have these skills that may be offered in an elective if they have to have six periods and they’re cramming in their core classes they may not be able to get that extra elective,” Howard said.
Howard said the arts program at Bullitt East has grown and she doesn’t want to see it “get lost in the shuffle.”
“We’re hoping that they choose to keep that extra seventh period so the kids can be able to get the electives that they need for this following year,” Howard said.
BCPS Superintendent Jesse Bacon said the school is not proposing a change and is just seeking feedback on the pros and cons.
