CLARK COUNTY, IN (WAVE) - Parents within West Clark Community Schools are voicing concerns over school conditions and overcrowding at Silver Creek High School in Clark County.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. John Reed said a 2014 usage study revealed Silver Creek High School has the capacity to hold 640 students and there are approximately 900 enrolled. But Reed said capacity issues are hard to define because of changing schedules and room usage.

However, parents argue safety concerns.

"About two years ago I lost my legs in a tornado. It just really concerns me that the building they're in is so overcrowded," said parent Stephanie Decker. "Are we going to get these students out effectively, do they have a safe place to go if there is a weather disaster?"

West Clark school officials state there are no safety issues within Silver Creek High School and a visit from the fire marshal proves all facilities are up to code.

"Mold, leaking roofs, doors that are not ADA compliant," said Decker. She'll be among dozens of parents and students attending Thursday's West Clark School Community's School Board Meeting, where a discussion of options facing Silver Creek High School will take place.

While students and parents said they are hoping for a brand new school, West Clark School Board President Brian Hurst said there is also the option to renovate the facility.

But for parent and West Clark Community School advocate Crystal Gunther, that option will not suffice.

"At some point, if the car keeps breaking, you have to get a new one. At some point you have to throw in the towel and say it's time. It's time for a new building," said Gunther.

Gunther points to pages of research to reveal a new school will provide the entire West Clark School corporation with options.

"Ultimately, any investment in education is not a bad investment," said Gunther.

The West Clark Community Schools board members will discuss the future of Silver Creek High School at their board meeting Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the West Clark Community Schools administration building.
