LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - No one was injured when someone fired shots at a Jefferson County Public Schools bus Friday morning. Police say they are looking for a white Chevy Malibu in connection to the crime.

Four students were on board when the bus was actually struck, but just one student was on the bus when the driver heard the initial shots. A family member of the that student says she fears it was intentional.

It happened around 6:30 a.m. Friday. JCPS bus No. 0830 just picked up a student on 46th Street near Market when the driver heard multiple gunshots fired. Neighbors reported hearing four shots as the bus drove by.

"It's just something that you don't want to hear, waking up in the morning and hearing something in your neighborhood first of all," neighbor Gary Carter said.

Officers were back on 46th Street Friday afternoon as the bus dropped off students.

A family member of the 17-year-old student on the bus during the initial shots tells WAVE 3 News that the teen was one of two juveniles shot on March 2 in the Shawnee Neighborhood on Amy Avenue.

"We think it is a fair assumption to say that the bus was targeted," LMPD spokesman Dwight Mitchell.

One woman tells WAVE 3 News she heard the shots and later noticed her windshield was hit.

The bus was headed to Buechel Metropolitan High School, an alternative school.

JCPS spokeswoman Mandy Simpson says after the driver heard the shots, he picked up three other students to get them off the street. She says just a few blocks later, more shots were fired and that's when the driver knew the bus was hit.

"We are extremely fortunate that no bullets penetrated the bus," Simpson said.

There are six visible markings on the school bus. Simpson says the bus driver was able to get to a safe location to meet with police.

LMPD interviewed neighbors, the driver and the students on board leading them to believe a white Chevy Malibu is involved. "What they are saying is that vehicle was in the area and maybe the gunshots came from that vehicle," Mitchell said.

If you have any information about this shooting you are asked to call 574-LMPD.
