CHARLESTOWN, IN (WAVE) - A speeding car in a southern Indiana neighborhood led to shots fired and ended with one man behind bars.

Nelson Bowen said Saturday night he noticed a Ford Bronco flying up and down their quiet street, Lakeview Drive, when his 8-year-old grandson was trying to ride his bike.

"When I walked out in the road and asked him politely to stop, he tried to run me over with it and come out with a four way lug wrench swinging it," Bowen said.

The report states that's when Bowen punched the driver of the Bronco. Bowen said his stepson, David Griggs, 27, fired three shots at the ground. The sheriff's office said there was a bullet hole in the door of the Bronco.

"If it didn't strike the vehicle, we have a lot of residences in that area, it could have traveled through a mobile home or things like that, so it is never good when these things happen," Clark County Sheriff's Office Corporal Scottie Maples said.

No one was hurt. Griggs was the only one arrested in this case. Bowen said Griggs has a gun permit and is an Army veteran who was just trying to protect his family.

"It's not very nice for the police to let everybody else do anything they want and arrest the one that is trying to do the proper thing," Bowen said.

The Clark County Sheriff's Office said with so many scary cases of road rage and fights going bad quickly, it's crucial to give them a call beforehand.

"It started with a complaint of somebody speeding down the roadway and several moments later we have three shots fired in a residential area, which is never good," Maples said.

Griggs appeared before a Clark County judge Monday afternoon. He remains in custody, charged with criminal recklessness and intimidation with a handgun.
