LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - It began nine years ago with 78 coats and a 7-year-old girl whose mission it was to keep the less fortunate warm.

Friday, Makenzie's Coat Closet handed out nearly 2,000 coats at the St. Vincent de Paul's Family Success Center.

Since 2006, Makenzie's Coat Closet has collected and given away more than 26,000 gently-used coats as well as hats, scarves and gloves.

"I've had multiple people come back and say that they've already been here, and they just wanted to thank me again," said Makenzie Smith, founder and executive director of Makenzie's Coat Closet. "It's something that you really just have to experience for yourself to understand how great of a feeling it is to know that you're making an impact by helping just one person."

St. Vincent de Paul is just one of the 50 donation sites Makenzie's Coat Closet distributes to throughout the metro area.
